On Tuesday, August 6, 2019 we held a “Demo Day” for Camp Digital. The event was an opportunity for parents, neighborhood residents, and city staff to see the camp in action. Campers used block coding to fly drones, drive robots, and solve puzzles.

Students at #CampDigital showcase their newly learned coding & drone flying skills at Young Terrace Community Center! The camp helps bridge the digital divide by providing lessons in computer science to under-served children! 📲🕹💻@Code4HR #NorfolkVA

This is a great story of #communityengagement!
BRAVO to the amazing volunteers from Code4HR for their great work with the young children and teens of Norfolk this summer at our Coding Camp. Kevin Curry drafted a great crew of tech experts to teach our youth about coding, creating web sites, programming robots and using drones. They showed up weekly at the City of Norfolk Government Young Terrace Community Center and Teens With a Purpose to hang out with these kids and encourage them to pursue STEM jobs.
I also want to give a huge shoutout to two companies that stepped in to ensure that the participants had the tools to make this happen with funding for new chromebooks, robot kits and drones. Thank you so much, Taylor Franklin, for your generosity and support of this super cool summer opportunity!! Thank you, thank you, thank you to The Franklin Johnston Group and Brinshore Development.
Councilwoman Mamie B. Johnson and I really enjoyed having the young scholars show us their new computer and drone skills. Watch out, Bill Gates!
